Contact Lens Cases, how often do you change your case?
What's the big deal with contact lens cases? Is there really a difference between cases? and How often should I change my contact lens case? Those are the main questions that you might be asking about your lens case. So let's answer them...
How often Should I Change my Contact Lens Case?
Answer: At Least Every 3 Months. In most cases of bacterial infection caused by contact lens use, the bacteria can be traced back to the contact lens case. Think about it, you replace your lenses on a given schedule. You replace your lens solution every time you wear your lenses. Why would you possibly keep the same dirty case around for months on end?. Take a good look at your contact lens case next time you are handling your contact lenses. DOes it look at all dirty? Just imagine you had a high power microscope; what little critters would you find?. So in short, keep your case clean and change it AT LEAST every 3 months for happy and healthy contact lens wear.
Is there really a difference between cases?
There are travel cases that have little mirrors. Some have fun pictures of animals or landscapes on them. OptiPack is known for their great travel cases. Kabba Clip is a contact case that attaches to a standard solution bottle to keep everything neat and tidy. Barrel Cases are favorites of many contact lens wearers, each lens is enclosed in it's own basket. The basket is then left in the little barrel.
Some cases leak when you travel with them, while other have nice gaskets to keep the solution in place. If you are a gas permeable contact lens wearer, you want to be certain that the cap of your case has texture on the inside of it. Otherwise your lenses can suction on to the cap and break.
Whichever style of contact lens case and accessory you use, here a few tips for keeping you contacts safe while in their case:
- Always keep one side of your case closed at a time, this will keep you from switching your lenses.
- Before closing your case, ensure your lens is in the case, submerged in solution. Lenses that are close to the threads when you close the case are at risk of being torn. (if your lens looks like cookie monster took a bite out of it, chances are it got caught in the case)
- When removing your lens from the case, be gentle. Soft lenses tear if you use too much pressure, and Gas Permeable Lenses can scratch from the pressure.
- Rinse your case with clean water and let it air dry when not in use, this will flush out the dirty solution and leave you with a clean case when you need it next.
- Replace your cases at least every 3 months to ensure clean and healthy contact lenses.
